Peyia Animal Rescue Club has been helping sick and injured animals for the past five years, we now have grave concerns for the future.
The economic situation is very worrying indeed for Parc and all the charities throughout Cyprus. The low value of sterling is causing serious problems for ex pats. The majority of British people resident here are dependent on income from the UK. They are being hit on all fronts. The straight euro/pound is the biggest problem but if you add to this reduced income from low interest rates on savings and also higher prices in the shops it is not surprising everyone is struggling. With the best will in the world, they simply cannot afford to give to charities as they did.
Our recent fund raising events have failed to raise the money achieved in past years. We are totally dependent on donations and fund raising events. Without the support of people who care about animals we will not be able to continue the work we are doing. Below is an example of some of the problems we face each day.
A dear cat we call Fat Boy turned up one day when we were feeding a group of feral cats. He was limping very badly and obviously needed help. He was quite friendly and we were able to put him in a basket and take him to the Veterinary. The poor creature had been shot in the leg and had splintered bones which had become infected. Anti biotic treatment and two weeks in a Parc Pen helped him to a full recovery. He is now happy living with a new family.
A young poodle x puppy dog was dumped near Coral Beach Hotel recently. She was in good condition but needed to be treated for parasites, spayed and micro chipped before we could look for a new home for her. She is now enjoying life in a foster home before she goes to her new family.
Parc are pleased to have a good working relationship with CYDRA (Cyprus Dogs Rehoming Association). They have helped Parc by finding homes for 14 of our dogs since August and have re- homed an amazing 300 dogs in 2008 most of them rescued from shelters in Cyprus. To find out more about CYDRA you can visit their website www.cyprusdogs.eu
Although Parc can recoup some of the costs from animals that are re-homed many of the animals we help have no owners and cannot be homed. We have neutered 300 homeless cats in the past year the majority of them are returned to their natural environment following surgery. One homeless cat can cost in excess of 50 euros and people may wonder whether the cost is justifiable. We have no doubt about this. We have managed many feral groups over the years and the number of cats in these colonies has reduced considerably over time.
One such group living in, and around, one of the green bins numbered 15 cats. The Cypriot lady living behind waited for the kittens to be born and then would dump them alive in the green bin. We rescued many of them and hand raised them. For obvious reasons we wanted to stop this and the best way was to spay the female cats. Over the past 2 years this group has now reduced to 4. While all free cats are entitled to a life it is in many ways a cruel existence and without support networks they must suffer terribly. Parc support numerous groups of feral cats and are currently feeding approximately 140 animals each day.
Parc is committed to help sick and injured animals. We will never refuse to treat a homeless animal. If you want to support us please try and make a donation or organise a fund raising event. Any donation is very gratefully received. Thank you.

Do you like a bigger dog?

This dear dog has been living rough for a couple of months. He is absolutely delightful so he has clearly been a much loved puppy dog. He is now about 18 months to 2 years old. He is friendly but a little nervous with strangers. He has not been neutered so will need to be done before he goes to a new home. He is great with people and seems to be ok with other dogs. He is being cared for by some kind people who have a small dog that doesnt like him so he is having to live outside. We have wormed and frontlined him and provided him with a nice bed and a thick blanket but he would surely love to have a home again. If you would like to meet JOJO then please telephone us.

SOS

Can anyone help please? We have a lovely 7 year old long haired cat that has lived in a domestic home as an only pet. His owner died recently and he has been fostered for the past six months by a man on his own in an apartment. Financial crisis forces a return to UK so C4 our lovely cat is back with Ann sharing a home with 40 other cats and 3 dogs. He is not happy. If anyone can offer him a home alone or with one other pet please contact us. Thank you.

Buddy is a young male collie x. He has lived with a family for the past 2 years but his owners (who regularly foster dogs for Parc) are in the process of moving house and cant continue to cope with all the dogs they have. Please can you help us to find a good home for this lovely, faithful, loyal dog. He is fully vaccinated and has been neutered. He is very low maintenance all he needs is some affection, food, water and a large garden. He loves going for a walk but is not demanding. Please telephone Ruth on 99961157 if you can offer Buddy a home.

Parc success!

We are very pleased to announce that we have found homes for 8 dogs in the past week and we have also homed our mother cat and all her five babies. All our dogs have gone to lovely people who really want a dog for life not just for Christmas. We carefully vet people who ask for a dog or a cat and we will only agree to adoption if the people wanting a pet are prepared to make a long term committment. Of course we accept that things change and sometimes re homing is essential but in general we want people to realise that an animal is family not something to get rid of when times are hard.
So to all the people who have taken parc animals a big thank you. And a big thank you to all our foster carers. Fostering is not easy, it is very hard to care for a dog or cat for a month or more and then be prepared to part with them when a home is found. However, fostering is an integral part of parc. Without foster carers we cannot function. Our carers do a fantastic job and we value you all.If you are prepared to take a homeless animal into your home and make him/her one of the family then contact us now. Thank you.

Two lovely little dogs

I have two lovely little dogs just arrived. One is Fido who is a Tibetan Spaniel (looks like a peke but has a very good temperament) he is just one year old. We have microchipped and neutered him. He is really sweet and likes other dogs, children and people. He is available only to very special people who will give him a guaranteed forever home.
The other fellow is 6 months old. He looks rather like a King Charles x. He is a fun dog not a lapdog. He is very gentle and loves people. He wants a lot of attention and his insecurity means he finds it difficult to be left alone so he will need help with this. He is good with other dogs and would probably cope ok if he has canine company. We have just neutered and microchipped him. Both dogs are in foster homes at present. If you can offer either of them a forever home then please telephone Ruth on 99961157.
WE WOULD LIKE TO WISH ALL OUR SUPPORTERS A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS. THINK OF US FEEDING ALL OUR DEAR HOMELESS ANIMALS ON CHRISTMAS MORNING. NO REST FOR THE TEAM BUT IF YOU COULD SEE THE DEAR CREATURES WAITING EVERY MORNING YOU WOULD FORGO THE REST TOO. ALL THE BEST EVERYONE. LOVE RUTH

BRILLIANT! BOTH DOGS NOW WITH GOOD PEOPLE IN GOOD HOMES.

Market stalls

In addition to caring for all our animals we also have to work very hard to raise money to pay for Veterinary bills and food. Our bills are now in excess of 2000 euros per month and with all the problems with sterling it is not easy. However, we had a very successful night at the Millenium Bar in Coral Bay raising 750 euros (many thanks to the brilliant Matt Edmondson who entertained us). Since then we have had a stall on the market selling goods donated to parc. We have raised about 450 euros over the two days. It is very hard work collecting goods, taking them to market and selling them and we are very grateful to all the volunteers that offered to help. A big welcome to our new volunteers Michelle and Caroline who have just come to live in Peyia and also to Richard and Kay. We always need help with fund raising so we are always pleased to find new supporters.
Our next function will be Burns night in January at Coral King, Coral Bay. This event was great last year so if you want tickets then give us a call. There will be Haggis, Piper, a Toast, splendid meal and Wicked Willie to help us dance the night away. All for 25 euros per person. For more information e mail or call 99961157.

Wwow have we been busy!!!!

By some miracle we have found wonderful foster carers for our dogs. In the past week we have got a permanent home for our Staffie x (Frankie) and met up with Tricia and Fred who very kindly offered to foster our two little dogs (picture below) who are waiting to join their family in England. Last week we picked up a dear little poodle x on the beach and although Dr. Maria kindly took her in she could not keep her over Christmas as she is fully booked with boarding dogs. We were desperate for a foster home for this dear little girl we called Lady. Hey Presto I got a telephone call today from Patricia and Mike who said they are here over Christmas and would be prepared to foster a dog for parc.
A huge thanks to all our foster carers. What would we do without you. All three dogs have now been placed in their temporary homes and we are sure they will settle well with the lovely people who have offered to care for them. Fostering a dog is not easy as it is very hard to part with them when the time comes for them to move on. But it is a great feeling knowing you have helped save a dogs life. If you can offer a dog or a cat a home for a couple of months then please contact us.

2 of our 5 kittens

We have five lovely kittens now ready to go to forever homes. They are full of fun, very healthy, weaned and litter trained. They are still with their mother in parc pens. Please come and see them they are delightful. More pictures tomorrow.

GOOD NEWS! MOTHER CAT AND ALL OUR KITTENS HAVE NOW FOUND HOMES.

Felix and Scrabbles have now got good homes

Thankfully after a very long time at parc these two lovely kittens have now got forever homes. Sadly they did not go together but both of them have settled well and are now safe and secure with their new families.
They are now nearly six months old. They have been in foster homes for four months and parc have neutered them, vaccinated them and given them the best food. They are happy kittens. We wish them and their new owners well.
